130 Study About Effect of Binder Addition and Sintering Temperature on Properties of Alumina Membrane by Slip Casting Method

Abstract:

In this laboratory study thin disc type pure alumina membranes have been prepared by slip casting method. Constant amount of 1,2-dihydroxy-3,5-benzenedisulfonic acid disodium salt (Tiron) at constant suspension concentration and various concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution were examined. Sintering temperature, solid content, PVA content, ball milling time and Tiron content were important effecting parameters on membranes that in this laboratory study sintering temperature and PVA content at the optimum of solid content, Tiron content and ball milling time were selected and investigated separately. Moreover structural studies by means of water adsorption and scanning electron microscopy were carried out on membranes. Sintering temperature was more influencing parameter than PVA solution on the membrane porosity. Appropriate membrane characteristics at various concentration of PVA solution and optimum temperature of 1250 oc were obtained at 300 cc PVA solution per 100 g of alumina powder. Also these characteristics at constant PVA solution concentration of 200 cc per 100 g of alumina powder were obtained at 1150 oc.
